On going research Projects

1. Electrospun fibers for interface tissue engineering

Personnel involved:
Shahram Riahinezhad
Zhaotong Meng

Electro spanning is a process by which fibers with sub-micron diameters can be obtained from an electrostatically driven jet of polymer solution. These fibers have a high surface area to volume ratio, which have numerous engineering applications. The objectives of this study are to evaluate electrospun fibers for interface tissue engineering .

2. Implants for Inter-vertebral Disc (IVD) Polymer

Personnel involved:
Mika Barnes

The objectives of this project are to design and evaluate mechanical effectiveness of a polymer hydrogel with respect to a natural tissue, build an experimental setup to produce 6 degree of freedom spine motions (6DOF), develop and validate analytical and simulation models with the experimental model, and measure the mechanical responses from intact and implanted vertebral columns, and verify the measurements with finite element modeling under 6 DOF spine motions.

3. Improvement of cements for biomedical applications

Personnel involved:
Melville Vaughan
Zhaotang Meng

A comparative study is required to evaluate the effect that different bioadditives and monomers have on the mechanical and biological performances on PMMA bone cement. The goal of this study is to determine the most suitable additives and alternative monomer for PMMA bone cement that can enhance the mechanical and biological performances of PMMA bone cement.

4. Polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) scaffold for tissue engineering applications

Personnel involved:
Jeremiah White

The goal of this research to design polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) scaffold having internal architectures for nutrient distribution using UV-photopolymerization process for tissue engineering application. In particular we are assessing the photoinitiator and internal architectures effects on the stability and viscoelastic properties of PEGDA polymer.
